Genie
Joseph is an award winning film and television director. Her
feature films have been on Variety's Top 50 list and have won international
awards. As a staff producer/director at KITV-4, (The ABC Affiliate in Honolulu)
she directed hundreds of TV commercials. Genie is the author of fourteen
screenplays - four of which have been sold and produced by independent companies.
SPOOKIES, a feature film distributed
by SONY, is a gothic-horror spoof which she co-wrote and directed. Spookies
won three awards in the International Festival of Science Fiction and
Fantasy Films in Paris.
INVASION OF THE MINDBENDERS, Starring Roy
Thinnes and Lee Turgeson, which Genie co-wrote and directed was shot in
Montreal. It is a teen Comedy/Sci-Fi about a behavior modification experiment
where they pipe subliminal sounds into a classroom to make free-thinking
kids conform.
She has published short stories and writes a "Quality of Life" column
for The Honolulu Newspaper. She and Matthew Gray,
the Restaurant
Reviewer for the Honolulu
Advertiser newspaper, were co-hosts of a talk radio show called LOVE
LIFE for six years. Their show continues to broadcast on their Web
Site, which attracts over 15 million page views per month.
With a Masters Degree in Communications, Genie teaches Television Production
and Screenwriting at Oleo, Hawaii's Community
Television. She works with a diverse cross-section of Oahu's
community, helping them focus their message and use the media to further
their personal or organizational mission. She also teaches screenwriting at various venues, as well as Low-Budget Filmmaking at the University
of Hawaii's Pacific New Media.
The Ohina Film Showcase showed her short film called CHOICES,
which deals with the subject of domestic violence. A sneak preview at The Honolulu
Academy of Arts, another short film, called "Choices", was shown, which won Genie "Best Director" at the New York
International Independent Film Festival. It was subsequently shown in one of the alternate
festivals at the Sundance Film Festival.
A more recent project of Genie's was again selected for the Ohina Film Showcase;
a 16-minute documentary she directed, called WE ARE THE PEACEMAKERS. This project is an overview of the Peer Mediation
Conflict Resolution Program at Leilehua High School. Chief Justice, the
Honorable Ronald Moon, has great praise for this video which was recently
presented at a special showing at the Hawaii Supreme Court. It is being
used to help the Board Of Education make critical decisions about what programs to support
in the future. Genie Joseph is also a Senior Mediator and group facilitator
at The Mediation Center of the Pacific, where she volunteers.
While in New York, Genie owned her own production company producing and
directing corporate communication and training films. Working with such
clients as The New York City Office of Business Development, Chase Manhattan
Bank, Jaguar Cars, Mobil Oil, Time, Inc and many other companies. She
specializes in blending information and entertainment, allowing the maximum
impact for all audiences.
